Oldies but Goldies
I was reading some blog post about the "debate" between scientists and creationist in USA (thanks, oh great FSM, blessed be his Noodly Appendage, that here in Italy creationist are in total minorance). Obviously not all religious people are creationists (as one of my christian friends point out, the catholic church recognise officially that there are no contradictions between their beliefs and the the scientific theories of evolution. I have still some doubt about this statement, but I recognise officially that I'm thick-headed, and my policy has always been that 'if they are not my enemies then they are my friends'), in fact I don't know personally any creationist (thanks to the Invisible Pink Unicorn, May Her Holy Hooves Never Be Shod). So this post is not about religious people, but about non-thinking people who really belives earth 6000 yr old, with an error of minutes. (As a comment, you can read the first 2 pages of "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gailman, if you can find it)
In fact all this querelle in USA reminded me of a couple of quotes in my quote collection. Amazingly, the first one come from the sunny California.

In California, Bill Honig, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, said he thought the general public should have a voice in defining what an excellent teacher should know. "I would not leave the definition of math," Dr. Honig said, "up to the mathematicians."
(The New York Times, October 22, 1985)
Delicious, I dare to say. It's a pity that I wasn't able to find the end of this story on the internet, I was really curious of the definition of math they come out.
Then a second, seriouser quote:
It has become almost a cliche' to remark that nobody boasts of ignorance of literature, but it is socially acceptable to boast ignorance of science and proudly claim incompetence in mathematics.
(Richard Dawkins)
And here we can't make fun of american culture, because this attitude is widespread in all the world, especially here in Italy. In fact the whole quote is likely to become a cliche'. People, we really should do something about it. For my part, I'm going missionary in S.Barbara, California. They need me. Blessed be the Tooth Fairy!!
