Micro Paranoia

An interesting but not nice at all effect of "extended phenotype" (see the omonymous book of R.Dawkins) is described in this and this posts. It appears that the Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite of cats and rats, can manipulate the behavior of its hosts. Rats infected by it, for instance, lose fear of the smell of the cats (the parasite can reproduce only inside cats, and a cat can be infected by eating an infected rat). Until now, nothing to be worried about. But the parasite can infect also humans, and it seems that infected human suffer the alteration of some psychological traits. I refer to the links above for the details. The contagion cat-to-human is mediated by meat touched by the cat, see here for details.
From a scientific point of view this is overly interesting. But the possibility of being manipulated by a microorganism makes me paranoid. Even because 30%-60% of the world population is estimated to be infected.
